Finding a wedding Photographer.

Your wedding is one of the most important milestones of one’s life. Finding the photographer that will immortalize this moment in time is equally important.

Some of the factors that will influence your choice is your budget, the style of photography you are seeing in your mind.

Whether you are looking for traditional, editorial, photo journalistic or fine art, there is a photographer best suited for your photographic needs.

Chances are your search will start on the internet or through recommendations and word-of-mouth.
Though the internet is a great place to begin your search, you should not hire someone without meeting them in person first, unless you are getting married in a vacation spot or a location where it is impractical for you to meet with them.

In that case, you might consider finding a local photographer that does "destination weddings."
If time is not a precious commodity, then you should meet with all your prospective photographers.
Focusing on this fact is paramount. The best photographer in the world with the worst attitude, no matter how good a price, is a sure guarantee for a stressful wedding day for everyone.
The interview is important to both sides because it allows both sides to gauge how they will get along.
That's why a contract that spells out the details will prevent any misunderstandings.

So don't base your decision on a hiring a photographer on a price quote over the phone. Your initial phone call should just be to see if they are available on your wedding date.
Most don't charge for that consultation, so you have nothing to lose.

Good wedding photography tells a story of how that day went for the bride and groom. The intrusting of those moments is not done lightly.
So there is no question your search should start online but you should be aware that the pictures on most photographer's website are not necessarily a good representation of their true abilities.

What you'll be seeing is a showroom of sort with their best photos taken over multiple events and over the length of time they've been in business. Keep in mind that your needs may be different. You are hiring them to document your all-important day from “start to finish.”

What you are looking for is consistency in the imagery. Don't confuse consistency with repetition. There should be consistency in how the photographer works with available light.
Are the images well exposed? Is there a lot of variety in their shots i.e. does it look like they moved around using different angles, lenses and shooting from different locations?

The skilful photographers and truly professional ones do all this. Some even set up lights of their own when the lighting conditions are bad. Examine the pictures of the brides to ensure that the lighting complements their décor and surroundings, and brings out their best features.

These days, almost all wedding photographers shoot in a digital format, so ask about your digital Proof .
Depending on the package you choose, you may or may not have access to the digital photo files. So ask about the proof: How many images will you get? What format will the negatives be in (raw image files or JPEGs)? Will the files be high-resolution enough for you to print quality photos from later? How long will you have to wait after the wedding before receiving your proofs? And will you get the retouched versions of your proofs (images?)

Speaking of retouching, come to your meetings educated about the process of post-production. Photoshop effects range from simple white balancing to beauty retouching and stylized art effects like super-saturated colors. Ask what retouching your photographer will do and what effects may cost extra.
Make sure that their photo package fits with what you are looking for. Many photographers offer an internet gallery and a chance for your guests to purchase photos of the wedding for themselves. This helps reduce the stress of getting prints to all interested friends and family.

Taking all those facts into consideration will help make your wedding day an event forever immortalized in awesome pictures.

Boudoir Photography a more intimate type of Portrait,

Boudoir Photography can be a very rewarding type of portraiture that you, as a photographer, can offer to your client: rewarding for you because you like to create beautiful art to make people happy.
Rewarding for her, because it offers her the chance to immortalize her beauty the way she sees it in her heart.

And whether the finished photo is to be shared amongst friends or solely to the pleasure of the client, these photos will be appreciated for years to come.

What is Boudoir?
Boudoir can be classified as a sub category of Glamour photography. Both genres features a female subject with an emphasis on sensual, sexy and flirtatious looks and poses.

The bedroom is the base atmosphere or location of boudoir. Lingerie (or less, depending on the subject’s comfort level) is the only dress code. However these are only suggestions as the glamour and boudoir genre is overlapping more and more and can include swimsuits, the pin-up girl look and much more.

The fears and motivations of boudoir:

Whether you are shooting a client, a friend, a girlfriend or models new to the profession, you should always treat them respectfully the way you do all clients that visit your studio. This kind of photography requires a high degree of sensitivity and understanding. Traditional portrait sessions can be intimidating at times for even the most confident subject. However, boudoir photography tends to take the unease to an all time high.

Your subject is very aware that she will be centre stage, trying looks and poses that might be out of character for her. Her goal is to look beautiful wearing intimate lingerie or less, yet she is likely to be nervous at the thought of being directed by a stranger (or even a familiar photographer) behind his camera.

However, there are a few things you can do to ease the model’s anxiety. Having a female assistant or one of her close girlfriends in the sidelines can help reassure her that nothing untoward will happen. Have a few props such as teddy bears, feather boas or silk scarves to help bring out her playful side. But respect her limits and stay within them. While some women will be comfortable and will bloom under the camera, some will be self-conscious. It is your job as the photographer to bring out the beauty that every woman has within her.

The reasons for purchasing boudoir photography:

Wedding gift: To present to the groom the night before, day of or even the day flowing the honeymoon. Many brides half-joked that giving the groom an album or a painting of sexy photos just prior to the big day would serve as “altar insurance” that he would show up for the wedding!

Anniversaries, Holidays, Valentine Day gift: One of the many ideas to spice up the coming years.

Just Because: Weight loss, job promotion, new boyfriend, post-pregnancy, divorce, etc… Only you can know the reasons why and we are here to make this a worthwhile reward.

Whatever your reasons, RA photography will meet with you to answer all the questions you may have. We will work with you on capturing the look you want to capture and will make it happen.

Pascale the Kali Hero

I asked one of my friend Pascale a model i have been working with
If she wanted to do a guitar hero inspired set for a 18+ web site i have been shooting for a few months and she said a very enthusiastic YES.

Her favorite persona in the Game was Pandora ,so we tried to mold her modeling to mimic that alter ego by making from scratch all stage plates and game screens.

The set was made from individual plates made in Photoshop and then added to the photos made in our studio .

Special effects like flames and lens flare was added to enhance realism.

Bold and Vivid studio project

A few month ago, my friend Daniel and I started Shooting out of a studio in the Glebe in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Being a co op of sort regrouping like minded individuals sharing rent on a nice but rather small place good for a starting photographers.
As the ideas and the demand grew , the place started to loose it's appeal and we started to look for a new place to call our own.
I started looking for possible places and the truth showed it's ugly face, office space are not to expensive to rent but does not work having  need of 10' minimum ceiling height , warehouses are best for high ceiling but too big and expensive for our budget.
The first hybrid place we've found was a perfect fit a storage place in the back with high ceilings and a small office in front , but after all the work we put into getting it, including a few postponed rendezvous the owner did not agree to the yearly lease we wanted.
Back to the despair of searching , gloom and doom our likely bread and then it smack me in the face , a work shop was for rent in the online adds with 12'+ ceiling ,garage door an office and break room/show room in the back of it, for an affordable price .
The owner was skeptic at first to think that  photographers would need an old car-wash as a studio but He has an open mind and is ready to the challenge as are we.

More to come in the this saga.

Hard efforts turn into rewards

I guess that wandering everywhere with my camera is starting to pay off.  The Autumn issue of  Photo News Magazine published two of my photos this month, and they sent me some lovely gifts.  While the National Geographic accessory bags are great, it’s the exposure in a national magazine that’s the real prize.   It feels amazing to have my work be recognized by other photographers.

Check out the Photo News Magazine’s web page. for my photos on page 11 and 12 , also  It  has loads of articles on new gear, and gives some great tutorials on techniques.

Thank you to ZAK media www.zakmedia.ca
Amplis Foto for the lovely gifts
and to Jaques Dumont, publisher of Photo news magazine for validating my efforts to become a better photographer.
